Anyone using Form Futura HD Glass Filament?

I'm starting a new thread on HD Glass Filament. I searched and saw none. Let me know if I'm mistaken as I don't completely trust the "Search" function here all the time.

I started it for two reasons:

1: I'm curious about it.
2: Since I am curious, there are probably many others who wonder about it.

I can't seem to find what it's made of and what solvent might work on it. Has anyone used it and tried to glue two parts together?

It appears to be nice to work with, needs no heated bed and doesn't warp. Sounds too good to be true but if so, nice.

It's pretty cool stuff. I have really only tried to print vase's with it. It's quite a bit more expensive than the normal ABS I buy so I have been stingy with it :P I still got quite a bit of red though, I used most the sample of red/clear and ended up ordering the red spool. The green look's very nice on their website photo's though.

In my experience though, I was having a harder time printing with it than normal abs/pla. At the time I did not have a active cooling fan so maybe that would help a lot, but it would build up around the extruder a lot while printing. Very gooey trying to get it all off.

Looks nice. I assume you print with thick layers so you can keep as much transparency as possible, like .25 or .30 layer thickness? Does it print clean or do you get bubbles and small random defects or gassing? It's called clear but at best it's really translucent with no base color I'd expect. I can't imagine you could print a cylinder the size of a water glass and have it look like clear glass. The layers are all going to refract no matter how spread out they are.

I think I'll buy some and try it. I see that Maker Geeks has it in the US now and you don't have to pay $41 shipping to get it from the UK now. I hadn't ordered any for that very reason since it was for fun and not for a paying job. That's good to see.

there is nothing special about it. its petg. no different than any other. the esun petg is just the same and far cheaper. all petg is very sticky. a slight amount getting stuck to the nozzle is normal but when it really builds up that is a sign of over extruding. first layers cannot be squished onto the bed as you usually would. the first layer need to go down perfectly at the same height as all the other layers. save your money and just buy esun. the stuff is super. of all the petg's i have tried theirs is about the highest quality.

I see that Esun petg is now on Amazon with free 2 day prime shipping. Guess I will be getting me some to try out.

Yeah I had e-mailed them about it because I was having a hard time trying to print a vase at 0.1, and they mailed back and said they printed theirs at 0.3, so I just printed that since then. I still have quite a bit of red, I could try to print some other thing's and see how it come's out.

As always Jim, great expertise and I'll take your advice.

thanks for posting the links. i have used most of these and can give a little feedback on many of them.


intservo is my supplier of choice for those of you in the us. great service, people and product. petg is great. printed over 30kg of the stuff
reprapper petg performed well, and as strong as all the others. extrusion was good but extremely difficult to dial settings in for. no room for error on this stuff. printed 6kg of it.
madesolid is good as well. its not petg. its their own formula. translucent colors are great and layer bond great. the solids dont layer bond all that great even at extreme temps. not like petg does anyway. its extremely pricy as well. printed 5 spools.
colorfabb is nice stuff. more rigid than esun but i think esun prints a little nicer. printed 5kg so far.
t-glase is also not petg and taulmans own formula. it would be nice material but like all taulman's stuff the extrusion is always inconsistent and all over the place. luck of the draw if you get a good spool. always makes good on it though. printed a couple few spools.
never tried gizmodorks but have heard good things.
microcenter petg is actually rebranded esun.
another supplier is winbo. gotta ship it in from china. its dirt cheap but it was really nice stuff. printed great. no complaints. only printed 1 spool.

Really good and comprehensive lists from both of you. I'm going to give eSun a try.

the hd glass is supposed to be more transparent than standard pet.

Haven't tried either yet.

I printed some HDglass last night. Really, really nice to print with. Very precise at 0.16 layer height, awesome stick at 50c on hair spray and absolutely no warp. Stiffer than ABS but still a bit flexible. I printed a small component case with a tab-lock lid. I could snap-on and snap- off without breaking the small tabs off. It's not water clear, but translucent. But a clear (not milky) translucent. I'm attaching another part. It's a copy of an antique light glass for a lamp.

I'm not seeing any "clear" eSun petg on Amazon of in GoogleSearch. I see Natural but doesn't appear to be clear like HDGlass. HDGlass looks like a clear thread of completely clear plexiglass on a spool. It really does look like solid glass on the spool. The eSun Natural appears to be a bit translucent from the start.

wont really make a difference rob. its not clear once its printed. clear or even filament that is slightly cloudy all looks the same. its a white translucent when its done. the natural esun is the only one i have not used since i still have spools of madesolid pet+ here in clear and i never really use it anyway. pet+ is crystal clear but of course still looks white when printed. has nothing to do with the filament itself. its just how the light is detracted as it passes through tons of separate threads of clear plastic. i believe what your seeing on the esun is just in the photo. when you get that it should be crystal clear. if your in doubt just email william at intservo and he will tell you how it is. i have seen prints done in it and it looks no different than my crystal clear stuff here and its just as clear as the pics you posted above.

Even though it's a bit pricy, I like the HDGlass. Sure, it refracts, but it refracts clear instead of milky. It's a subtle distinction. I saw another clear PET print today and while you could tell it started as a clear filament, the refracted material had a slight "whitish" cast to it. HDGlass really doesn't have that milkiness. It seems to be just a bit clearer. Again, subtle, but significant.
