Please Help - Senior Moment Strikes

Hi, I have just come back to 3D printing after about a year of playing with other toys, and have forgotten everything I ever new!!

I have the i3-12" printer with a Rumba board interfaced to raspberry Pi running Octoprint. I had to do some work on the hot end, which in turn meant re-calibrating the ABL. So far so good, but now I can't figure out how to get the new offsets into the Rumba config file. Somewhere in the recesses of my grey matter I recall using the Arduino IDE. As I am not sure of the contents of the config file is there anyway I can download it, or edit it directly or do I have to upload a new config file and overwrite the current one? My fear in just uploading a new one is that I am not sure I have a good copy of what is already on the Rumba.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Are you just running the stock MakerFarm firmware? If so... You probably would just download it... And install Arduino from Arduino.cc. You would then double click on Marlin.ino . You would set your board type and what serial port the board is on (with the USB cable connecting the board to the computer).

Then click Ctrl-U to compile and upload the firmware.

PS. I don't have a MakerFarm printer. But those steps are going to be very similar for any RepRap printer that uses Marlin firmware.

Thanks Roxy, I suspect I am running stock and any changes I made were in the config file. I was hoping there was a way to download (or at least view) the files on the Rumba board. Failing that I'll hold my breath and download the stock and modify the config.

Depending upon how old your firmware is in the board.... Marlin has been getting better and better about letting you see the configuration stored in the board. If you do a M503, it will tell you the current settings. But like I say... The new firmware is better at doing that than the older software.

Having been down this road a *lot* of times:

1) Get a notebook. Label it "i3 Printer"
2) Each time you change something, write down the change in the notebook
3) Each time you put in firmware, write down the version and settings in the notebook.
4) Each time you do a config file, save it in a folder on the computer with the date on it.
5) When you do a setup, note the values you came up with
6) When you cable up a board, note what goes where in the notebook
7) Date the pages at the top so you can figure out what was done when
8) Either keep notebooks by machines or by dates. Machines makes it easier to track down. One book at a time (dates) makes them a bit easier to index. If you do the date approach, mark the top of the page with what you are working on....

Yes it's a bit tedious. Each step takes a few seconds to complete. Once you get into the habit, it really does not add much time to the whole process. It's still not *easy* to figure things out. When I go into a 20 year old notebook, there is a bit of head scratching. More often than not, the info in there is useful in moving forward with a fix.

Thanks Bob, your suggestion has actually beem my "new" methodology over recent months. Unfortunately my previous tinkerings took place before I saw the light!

I'm going to bite the bullet and go with a new download and compile. Hopefully I will re-learn some of what I have forgotten by tweaking the files to get it all working again!

Ok, so grab the notebook and write down everything you have. Update the firmware with the MakerFarm image first and note how it works (yes it will take 20 minutes). That way you know it's all hooked up ok. Then grab RC7 (or whatever) and start doing all the changes in the config files. Marlin is set up to handle a *lot* of printers and the git hub version is not pre-configured to work for the MakerFarm. Note and check the mods, you will have a bit of head scratching. Being sure the printer works first will save a lot of time as you check the settings changes.

I would use a visual diff program to cross the MakerFarm's Configuration.h values over to the RC-7's Configuration.h file. You need to go through difference by difference and make intelligent choices. But if you can get it close... The printer will start doing things and you can do a couple more edits to get it behaving right.

It's more the issue of, transfer settings + enable new stuff that generally ties you up in knots when going from 1.0.0.0.0 (or whatever MakerFarm is on) to something several years further down the line. The info is all there in the file and you can work it out. Getting all of it right the first time .... don't count on it :)

Little things like .... mesh bed level + BLTouch + RC Bugfix != success ; (just proved that one).

Yes... That is true! BL-Touch is going to be adding a new mode to the probe. If you set the servo angle at 60 degrees, it will put out the status much more like a micro-switch does. It won't put out a 5ms pulse when set at 60 degrees. I wish I had a new version of the probe!!!!

Having spent the last 8 hours looking at just how "interesting" the output of he BLTouch is at the moment ... they can't make it any worse. I'm struggling to get it below 0.1 mm on spread over 50 repeats. Repeatability that is at >1/2 my normal layer height simply isn't going to cut it. With std deviations at 0.04, simply getting to 0.1 spread is unlikely .... If the 0.005 one sigma in their ads is correct, I'm doing something very wrong.

Trying to dig out just how to turn off the "alarm" on the BL from inside Marlin right now ... so much fun :)

So as I understand the thread over on git hub, when the steps go out past 2 ms, bad things happen in terms of catching the 5 ms wide pulse. The MakerFarm's are 4000 steps per mm on the Z axis. At 500 steps / second that would be 1/8 mm per second or roughly 5 mm / minute. My default Z feed is 2 mm / s so it's in the "ok" region. My data before was a default / 10 so 0.2 mm/s. That seemed to work fine on faults. It was junk on spread and one sigma.

Using the above data, to be out around 0.05 mm at 0.2 mm/s your timing would have to be off by 250 ms. If things are sampled at faster than 2 ms, that's a lot of time.

I kinda doubt my one sigma is from timing issues / the machine running to fast. You could trigger the data with a relay and do better than what I'm seeing.

If you watch the probe long enough as it cycles, you can catch "late" pickup events. The LED "blinks" slightly as it activates. The interesting point is that they do *not* correlate to min or max reading events. The data is still in there with the rest of it.

Contrary to all prior experience, the problem does *not* go away when DEBUG_ALL is invoked. Crazy stuff :). So far, it's really hard to see how this is software related.

Off to butcher some poor helpless Marlin functions ....

Put a median filter into the probe routine. Running with a fast probe speed (= default on the Pegasus) it improves things by ... surprise! ... square root of the samples (almost). On M48 P40 V4, the standard deviation goes from about 0.030 to about 0.015. With 5 samples that's almost right. There is something else in there other than just 1/F (flicker) noise.

Progress is being made!. Now using 1.10 RC7, pretty much everything is up and running and ready for fine tuning with one exception.

During ABL the head will move into position, servo drops down, probing is done (twice 1 fast 1 slow), head moves to next position BUT it does not raise the Z-Axis. As the servo si still down (as I believe it should be), the probe switch drags across the bed.

I have #define Z_PROBE_TRAVEL_HEIGHT 5 is there anything else that needs setting? I must admit I am going a little cross eyed reading through the config files.

Switch over to RC-Bugfix. If you already have the configs for RC7, it should be a fairly quick change. There were a bunch of fixes for the BLTouch made about 10 days ago.

I switched over to RC-Bugfix and ran into problems compiling. With NO modifications to any of the files it compiles OK, but to get the LCD working I need to un-comment the following in Configuration.h

I can still compile after this.

At least my (possibly incomplete) understanding is that displays are an either / or sort of thing. You get to pick one of them. I do not have the DOGLCD define uncommented and it compiles fine.

I guess I read the Configuration.h comments as:

Select either a Graphics or Text LCD at line 1100/1101

Then select the specific display later on, in my case line 1253.

One more obstacle overcome, luckily I have nothing that needs printing right now so I'll just play with the code.

Rejoiced a little to quickly above...... it compiled OK but there was no display on the LCD!!!

Programme will compile with either option if the other is commented out,BUT only provides a blank screen.

IF I remove U8glib from the system then the compilation with #define DOGLCD fails, complaining of no U8glib, however compiling with #define REPRAP_DISCOUNT_FULL_GRAPHIC_SMART_CONTROLLER give no errors at all, which suggests that U8glib is not being used.
Which would mean no display.

I don't know whether the above is of any use to anyone with a better knowledge of Marlin than me?

MANY thanks Bob, the file compiled first time AND I have a screen, albeit a very slow screen, but I believe that is a known issue that is being worked on. Was this file from RC-7, RC-Bugfix or RC-8?

Next I want to do a thorough comparison between your file and mine as it is bugging me as to what I did wrong.

Copious notes / spread sheets will be made to track this as we are heading down to Alabama for 3 months in the New Year, and I don't want to forget (again) how to make it all work!!

Keep in mind, there are several lines missing on the tail end of that file. It also has some def's in it that drive my custom code for the median filter. The RC-Bugfix that it came from was new as of a couple days ago. It's was done just before RC-8 came out.

Well I guess the thread title sums it up nicely, the Senior Moment came back to embarrassingly haunt me again!

I went through the Configuration files and spotted the error. It was stupidity on my part!

I had undefined :
//#define REPRAP_DISCOUNT_SMART_CONTROLLER

Instead of

#define REPRAP_DISCOUNT_FULL_GRAPHIC_SMART_CONTROLLER

That would explain all the anomalies I was seeing. Obviously I had this set up correctly in earlier files, but I guess when I edited one of the newer files I focused on the #define REPRAP_DISCOUNT_ part of the line instead of the whole thing!

Now I can push forward, and barring similar stupid errors, get the printer up running and tuned.
