Adding Quasicrystals to Complex Metal Alloys makes new 3d printing material

Researchers at the University of Lorraine have announced the development of a quasicrystal composite material for use in 3D printing. This material brings the advantages of reductions in friction and corrosion of manufactured parts. In addition, the combination of this quasicrystal with a complex metal alloy has given 3D printing a material for use that has the strength of a brass-steel alloy but with reduced density. This decrease in density has made the material of interest to the aeronautics and automobile industries, areas that are always searching for means to reduce weight and thereby increase fuel efficiency. The researchers have published their results and are currently undertaking further work to investigate possibilities for this material in the medical field.
