Teen Develops System with Smartphone and 3D Printed Lens to Diagnose Eye Disease

Diabetic retinopathy is a complication of diabetes that damages the blood vessels in a person's retina and can lead to visual impairment. 16-year-old computer science whiz Kavya Kopparapu used a smartphone, 3D printing, and artificial intelligence to develop a portable, inexpensive diagnostic system for this common eye affliction. Kopparapu's grandfather, who lives in India, began displaying symptoms of the disease in 2013. It can often go undetected, and while he was eventually diagnosed and treated, his vision did deteriorate. She wondered if there was an easy, inexpensive way to diagnose the disease, and came up with the idea for Eyagnosis, a machine-learning system/smartphone app with a 3D printed lens that could possibly turn a lengthy, expensive diagnostic procedure into nothing more than a quick photo session.
