Penn State Researchers Speed Up 3D Scanning and Printing

Research from Penn State, led by Dr. Shizhuo (Stuart) Yin, and written in conjunction with the Army Research Laboratory, offers a technological advance that promises to speed scanning and printing times. This advance in high-speed beam-scanning devices offers the potential to speed 2D and 3D printing by up to one thousand times, as scanning speeds move from the range of microseconds up to nanoseconds. Dr. Yin noted that a 20,000-page 2D print job would take just one minute, while a one-hour 3D print job could be cut down to just seconds. Would be quite dramatic! Anybody read the paper - wondering how long it could take before we see commercial prototypes with this technology, and whether there are "a few" major hurdles before that?

they do seem to be getting printing and scanning confused.
It also completely ignores the physical and mechanical aspects of both scanning and printing.

To me, it looks like someone after grants to develop 'miracle' technology - and looking square at the gigantic military research budget.
