3D Printed Facial Implants Used to Reconstruct Accident Victim's Injured Face

Oral and Maxillofacial Surgical expert Dr Mohd Nazimi Abd Jabar recently collaborated with Materialise Malaysia to implant a 3D printed structure to repair a woman's facial fractures caused by a horrific car accident. The process used 3D planning software - and a custom-made 3D printed titanium device - to reconstruct the skull around the patient’s left eye. It resulted in cosmetic improvements, but perhaps most importantly, helped alleviate pain she experienced and the occurrence of excruciating headaches. Nazimi says 3D information helps doctors have a better understanding of a patient’s unique anatomy and the relationship between bone, soft tissue, and other internal structures.
