Cranioplasty and 3D Printing

Dr. Ivan Ulianovsky worked with neurosurgeons at the Vologda Regional Hospital in Russia after they approached him for assistance in creating a mold for a cranioplasty in order to fabricate an implant for a patient who, following a traumatic injury, possessed extensive defects in his skull. Rather than opt for more traditional titanium for the implant, Dr. Ulianovsky worked with Protakril-M, a cold-cure acrylic powder, which would require a precise mold. Following a CT scan, a 3D model was created to map the patient's skull and produce a physical model. This approach proved successful, and the patient is recovering.
