Patient's Eyesight Saved Thanks to 3D Printing

A patient in Cardiff, Wales is on the path to recovery from a life- and eyesight-threatening tumor thanks to the collaboration of a progressive surgeon, Dr. Satyajeet Bhatia of the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff, and PDR, a top design and research institute associated with Cardiff Metropolitan University. The collaborative team conceived of a surgical plan that involved using 3D scanning, modeling, and printing technology to remove the tumor and reconstruct a portion of the patient’s skull. In addition to using a 3D printed template for the procedure, Dr. Bhatia also inserted a 3D printed custom titanium multi-part implant.
