NASA Engineers Study How Residual Stresses Affect 3D Printed Rocket Parts

NASA engineers at NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama are studying exactly how residual stresses affect 3D printed rocket components, but to do so they needed the help of another scientific facility. So they used the Neutron Residual Stress Mapping Facility at Oak Ridge National Laboratory's (ORNL) High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR), beam line HB-2B. This resource allowed for greater exploration of exactly how neutrons will have a positive impact on 3D printed rocket engine parts, with the priority being on safety. The NASA engineers will release all of their research to the public so that further improvements can be made in additive manufacturing and 3D printing.
