'Linked' The Massive Community 3D Printing Project
For the second year in a row, artist Jeff de Boer and PrintToPeer will be sponsoring the crowdsourced sculpture linking together hundreds of 3D printed medallions bearing images or logos. Applicants are to download the files for 3D printing their pieces with images or logos at PrintToPeer. The deadline for sending in 3D printed medallions is December 16, 2014. All the medallions will be linked together by volunteers at RepRap in Edmonton on December 17, with the enormous 3D printed ‘living sculpture’ being on display in Edmonton on December 18. Last year, during the creation of "3D Printing for Dummies" I and my co-author (Richard Horne) sent in tiles for this project, which was a remarkable opportunity for global participation by educational, maker, and other communities with an interest in 3D Printing and crowd participation. Unlike Project Egg, these tiles are small (fit in an envelope) and easily customized to your intent and design around the base "tile" model. I encourage everyone to try it and send at least one (or two) tiles in to share in the fun!
