3D Printed Models Assist in Surgery to Reverse Craniosynostosis

A baby in China has successfully undergone surgery to change the shape of his cranium and reverse the effects of craniosynostosis. At eight months, little Xiao Yu’s head was not only seriously misshapen from the birth defect, but other dangers loomed as well, from that of developmental issues and seizures, to even the possibility of death. Using a 3D printed model of the baby’s cranium, surgeons were able to made a comprehensive study for a first-time procedure in China, re-shaping the eight-month-old’s head and correcting the defect. Not only that, they also used measurements from his family’s heads and faces to help in redesigning the cranium.
