Following increased attention to head injuries to pro football players, the NFL has become proactive in trying to prevent lasting injury. The NFL teamed up with Under Armour and General Electric in Spring 2014 to create the Head Health Challenge. The challenge will run for four years, in parts, and award up to $40 million to participants to seek solutions to the NFL's problem. A solution has arisen from UCLA and Architected Materials in the form of "Architected Lattice," a microlattice of 3D printed materials engineered to fit into a helmet and lessen the impact of blows to the head.
