Interesting. Solid Concepts is now selling these 3D Printed metal 1911 replica pistols for $11,900. According to a press release earlier today:

Solid Concepts will release a limited run of 1911 3D Printed metal guns for purchase; we will only manufacture 100 of these limited edition 3D Printed metal guns. The limited run 1911 3D Printed metal guns will be built and serialized with the option of unique customization using our Additive Metal Manufacturing technology. Each 3D Printed gun will be manufactured with Inconel 625 and Stainless Steel components. Post machining and hand polishing will complete the manufacturing process and each assembled pistol will undergo 100 rounds of test firing. We are offering buyers the chance to tour our Texas facility and watch their gun being printed with the added benefit of joining our lead additive manufacturing engineers on the range for the first test firing of the buyers’ limited 1911 gun.

The gun got the attention of many 3D printing fans, as well as Gun rights activists, about 6 weeks ago, while alarming some. The fact that they can mass produce these pistols and sell them off is quite a remarkable step. For those who are alarmed, luckily the printer they used to produce these guns is a high tech 3D Printer which would set you back tens of thousands of dollars, so the general public will likely not be operating one of these in their basements just yet. That time is coming though as 3D Printer prices continue their drastic decline in price.

After seeing the articles about 3D printing possibly curing blindness, this sure is one big reminder on how some people just can't think of doing something more peaceful and beneficial with the powerful abilities technology can offer. Sigh.
