In endeavoring to handle budget and time restraints for the COSMIC-2 mission, NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) contacted RedEye, a Stratasys company, regarding using 3D printed materials for their medium-sized project requiring 30 antenna array supports for the FORMOSAT-7 Constellation Observing System for Meteorology, Ionosphere, and Climate (COSMIC-2) satellite mission. Previously they have used astroquartz for the arrays due to its strength and ability to handle harsh environments like space. With the use of Stratasys’ ULTEM 9085 material, they are able to create 3D printed arrays that fit into all the requirements for the project in terms of durability, affordability, and efficiency in the time it takes to 3D print them.
