Developers at the Center for Inclusive Design and Environmental Access (IDeA Center) at the University of Buffalo in coordination with Touch Graphics, Inc. have built and tested several prototypes for 3D maps that are in use at several different locations currently. They have created innovative map designs at several venues that feature 3D printed structures with conductive paint that light up when tapped, and offer details like fountains that gurgle and bell tower that chime. The 3D maps are meant to give the impaired a sense of their environment with the 3D printed miniatures, and allow them to get around as independently as possible.
