Emerging Objects has created a 3D printed structure called "Quake Column," which was inspired by the ancient architecture of the Incas, as well as the California landscape which is often disrupted by earthquakes. The Incas used an ashlar technique of interlocking heavy stones, which due to the lack of mortar, was able to achieve some movement during seismic activity, cutting down on destruction. Ronald Rael and Virginia San Fratello of Rael San Fratello also own Emerging Objects, which is a subsidiary of their architectural firm. With Emerging Objects, they explore 3D printing and research using a variety of new materials. More details on the Quake Column can be found here: http://3dprint.com/16310/3d-print-quake-column/
