3D Printed Rock Candy Structures
Aaron Porterfield, a member of Instructables.com, decided to try his hand at sculpting structures for use in making rock candy. He found a recipe, figured out the simple science behind the process, and set to work by downloading a free app from Autodesk Meshmixer to sculpt the structures on which the crystallized candy could grow. He then used 3D printing technology to print the structures, which are made up of a variety of spikes, with a freestanding base. He immersed the pieces in the sugar-water concoction and put them inside a container, with rock candy growing successfully on the spikes after several days.
