3D Printed Hermit Crab Shells Provide New Homes for Natures Hermit
An artist by the name of Aki Inomata has taken it upon herself to 3D print new shells for hermit crabs to live in. These aren't just any shells, but rather shells that look like large cities, such as New York etc. She used a very precise process to create shells that these hermit crabs would choose to live in once they have outgrown their previous shells. A year ago, Japanese artist Aki Inomata created a series of 3D printed cityscapes to serve as new homes for her growing hermit crabs. After watching the whimsical decapods traipse around in their metropolitan mansions, she decided to explore the relationship between colonization and creation through the creation of a Japanese wedding chapel in miniature. The beautifully attired crustacean is truly zen in its new home leaving plenty of time for the viewer to contemplate the relationship between the colonized and the colonizing.
