Use of Slicer

Hello,

Me was told that i have to use Slicer to print some files...
But, I downloaded a stl file from the internet, took it to my printer and print it by the setup from the printer programm.

Why do I need slicer then?
And, if I must need it? How do I use it?

What printer program do you use?

You need to use some sort of slicer that creates a Gcode so your printer knows what it has to do what layerheight and speed and temprature and such.
Cura from ultimaker is quiet easy, and is imo great for most prints,
Slic3r is also good but i rather use Cura ^^

I have at the moment only an up! plus 2.
But i still have problems with the slicer programm. I hope there is a manual (in dutch) for it...
