Researchers at the University of Washington have developed a way to screen for pancreatic cancer using only a smartphone app and a 3D printed box. The BiliScreen app detects elevated levels of bilirubin, a substance in the blood that causes jaundice and that increases due to conditions such as hepatitis and pancreatic cancer, by isolating the whites of the eyes when a selfie is snapped. Special algorithms allow the app to detect early levels of jaundice that are invisible to the naked eye and could lead to much earlier detection of disease.
