A research team in Australia wanted to automate part of their wine research by integrating robotic sampling into the process, but first they needed to redesign the flask and airlock used for the testing. Several design iterations were tried, using processes including stainless steel and silver soldering and FDM 3D printing. Those approaches had many disadvantages, however, so the team turned to a different form of 3D printing - Carbon's Digital Light Synthesis.
