The Mayo Clinic has just announced the success of its first-ever face transplant procedure, performed on 31-year-old Andy Sandness of Wyoming. Sandness, who required significant reconstruction to the lower half of his face following a suicide attempt in 2006, underwent a 56-hour surgery to receive the transplant in June 2016. The procedure was performed by a well-prepared medical team of approximately 60, who spent years practicing -- aided significantly in their efforts by a 3D printed model, 3D printed surgical guide, and virtual surgical planning.
