Scientists in Australia have used 3D scanning and printing technology to determine that despite previous claims, no, they do not think that the 400 million year old fossil of Buchanosteus had teeth; rather, through being able to study the fossils more extensively, they have concluded that there was no ‘orthodentine,’ as would be typical in a tooth—but rather only dental tubercles. With this discovery, they disputed a previous paper. The 3D printed evidence allowed the scientists to discover much about the ancient placoderm too, such as how the jaw moved.
