When jewelry-making molds were uncovered on the Orkney Islands, they were too delicate to be used to recreate the pieces they had originally been designed to produce. However, a postgraduate student at the University of the Highlands and Islands Archaeology Institute saw the potential that 3D printing provided. He scanned the molds and used them to create a digital model of the pin that they would have made. Then the pin was printed in wax and the original pin recreated using a lost wax technique.
