Belgium’s Musée Royal de Mariemont has truly gone above and beyond with one of their latest exhibitions, meant to mix the world of ancient Egypt with high technology and pop culture which shows our fascination with the history—from movies to games to comics. Vigo Universal was brought in to recreate the famed Stargate portal from the franchise that involved not only movies but also a TV series, games, and comics too. While you may not put a lot of thought into how much work goes into a prop—and especially one as central as this portal—when you check out the video of the design team, their project becomes that more impressive. It took the Vigo designers a milling machine, laser cutter, and a Flashforge 3D printer to make thousands of pieces which had to be painted and assembled—resulting in 1,000 hours of work overall.
