It is one thing to abstractly understand that you live near a volcano and another to experience an eruption first hand. Recently, a group of 120 school children who live in the villages on and around the volcano Popocatépetl got to learn about the specifics of their topography and how it affects lava flow, but in a safer way than provided during an eruption. Instead, the students used 3D printed molds to make plaster casts of their volcano and were then given syringes with red liquid that they dripped onto the top of the volcano in order to see how it would flow down their mountain.
