Sneaking Duck Glasses To Offer 3D printing Customization of Frames

What better way to set your business apart from the competition than to offer customers the ability to customize their eyewear with the help of 3D printing. That's just what Sneaking Duck announced today:

The company will allow customers to create their own glasses online, selecting the frame color, the length of the arms, and any etching on the frames. The glasses will sell for $360 each, and will hopefully go on sale sometime in the next few month:

I think this is a great potential and likely standard use of 3d printing for consumers, but it falls short to me in best practices for designing the end product. For the best possible custom glasses, an optometrist or glasses vendor with a retail operation would also want to be able to take custom measurements of the person's head and face, either manually or using a 3d scanner.

This would also allow for virtual fittings of the glasses that could be rendered as images and even print a low quality version of the frames to test things out first.
