While Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce is the one who will have to get out on the track and show her stuff at the next 100-meter meet, the Nike design team has already been victorious in creating a customized, 3D printed running shoe that’s been proven to shave .013 seconds off of the Olympian’s performance. As the current World champion in the 100-meter race, and perhaps the fastest female sprinter the world has ever known, Fraser-Pryce wanted to better her time further. The Nike team found that she was experiencing a slight fatigue at the 70 to 80 meter mark and they worked to provide her with a 3D printed sole that would allow for just the right amount of stiffness needed for a sprint spike. Before getting on with 3D design and 3D printing however, they turned to nature for inspiration, examining ocean forms to help give them an idea of how to get the right combination between natural movement, required stiffness, and a light weight.
