When Lilli, a red-crowned crane in the Guangzhou Zoo in China, lost a fight, she also lost the front half of the top of her beak. Unable to feed herself, she would have starved to death without the intervention of her caretakers. Having heard of the possibilities for prosthetics created through 3D printing, a team began gathering the measurements that would be necessary to craft her a new beak. Once the design was finalized, it was printed in titanium a material that can stand up to the long life expectancy of these birds as well as provide for the superior anti-corrosion qualities important for these water feeders.
