A group of researchers from Purdue University and the University of California, Riverside are studying one of nature's most fascinating creatures in the hopes of developing new super-strong materials. The rainbow-colored mantis shrimp is beautiful to look at, but it's also a brutal killer that beats its prey to death with a virtually indestructible club-like appendage. The researchers have been studying the structure of that appendage for years, and recently they were able to replicate it through 3D printing. The impact-resistant structure could be used to develop new materials for armor, helmets, and even planes and cars. Read more at 3DPrint.com: https://3dprint.com/136743/mantis-shrimp-materials/
