In 2013 in the UK, a six-year-old girl named Ellie Butler died of severe head injuries suspected to have been caused by her father Ben Butler, who allegedly beat his daughter in a fit of rage. The 36-year-old man continues to claim innocence, stating that Ellie died after accidentally falling off her bed, despite the fact that forensic experts described her injuries as similar to those sustained in a severe car crash. To better illustrate Ellie's injuries to the jury, 3D printed replicas of her skull were made from CT and x-ray images and presented to the court. It's the first time that 3D printed skulls have been used as evidence in the British legal system, though whether they will lead to a conviction or exoneration remains to be seen.
