One very lucky parrot in China has received a new lease on life thanks to 3D printing. After getting into a spat with another parrot, Huizai’s beak began to crack and actually fall off. He lost confidence, as well as his appetite. As everyone at the zoo became concerned, they contacted the Nanjing Research Institute of Additive Manufacturing. The team there was able to construct a new beak, 3D printed free of charge, after scanning one from a healthy cockatoo of the same type. After a quick surgery, the new prosthetic was attached with 11 nail bones. The bird is now happy and healthy, eating again, and is also being accepted back into the flock by his peers.
