Air New Zealand has announced that they intend to begin incorporating 3D printed parts into the cabins of their airplanes, starting with the cocktail trays in business class. The small part may not seem very significant, but a broken one can put up to three seats out of commission for weeks while the airline waits for a replacement to be manufactured and shipped. That's a significant loss of revenue, so the airline is cutting out the middleman and 3D printing its own lightweight trays with help from the Auckland University of Technology.
