Stop-motion animation studio Laika was recently honored by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for their pioneering work with 3D printing. In 2009, the studio made history with Coraline, which was the first stop-motion feature film to use 3D printing in its animation. The studio used a 3D printer to create a total of 6,333 faces - and 207,000 facial expressions - for its characters, making them almost frighteningly expressive and human. Since then, the studio has gone on to create several other hugely successful stop-animation films using the same techniques.
