One very lucky patient in Bangkok once again has use of her hand--and more specifically, her thumb--after surviving a bout with cancer and a tumor that damaged her first metacarpal bone. Doctors and engineers from both Phramongkutklao Hospital and Chulalongkorn University, respectively, were able to create a 3D model from X-rays of the 37-year-old patient’s hand, from which a 3D printed titanium prosthetic bone was created. One surgery was required to remove the deteriorated bone and another months later to insert the titanium piece. The procedure was not only successful, but the patient has complete functionality of her thumb once again--something that would not previously have been possible without this new surgical innovation.
