Sailors can be a feisty lot, but hopefully 3D printing is bringing new safety to their world in terms of the trapeze. For those who enjoying taking hiking out of the boat to a more extreme and technical level, trapeze sailing is very popular. It has risks though as sailors can become entrapped if the hook on their harness is not released quickly enough in a situation where the boat has capsized--potentially leaving the sailor tethered to a boat in distress. Collaborating with sailor Julian Bethwaite, the Allen Brothers of the UK have manufactured a new keyball system which eliminates the problematic hook all together, in favor of a 3D printed ball-and-socket system.
