When 81-year-old "Peter Liu" began experiencing such significant problems with his spine that he became paralyzed in his left leg and the pain was intolerable, he was admitted to the Fujian Medical University's hospital. To prepare for surgery on his spinal column, which had narrowed to less than 1/3 that of a normal person's, the medical team printed a life size model of his lower spine. Due to their ability to familiarize themselves with Liu's individual case, the time for the surgery was reduced, the team was better prepared for its performance, and even the incision made to reach the affected location was reduced in size.
