This 3D Printed Copper Scuba Helmet Is Awesome

A rather talented designer named Bo Noergaard Silkeborg has set out to create one of the coolest pieces I have seen in a while, a retro scuba helmet with patina and all. Silkeborg printed the helmet in 26 separate pieces using his XYZ da Vinci 3D printer. He then painted it meticulously with copper paint and allowed patina to grow on it. He even decided to 3D print his own head in order to place it inside the newly fabricated helmet. As you can see from images below, the helmet has turned out quite nicely. More information on the process that Bo Noergaard Silkeborg used for this piece can be found here: http://3dprint.com/77643/3d-printed-retro-scuba-helmet

It's just not a SCUBA helmet.

Technically, no. Its actually a diving helmet, not a SCUBA helmet.

    U nderwater
    B reathing
    A pparatus

These types of diving helmets were supplied with air from the surface via an umbilical hose connected to a compressor topside therefore they fail the "Self Contained" part of SCUBA.

Been NAUI certified since 1983 (Instructor was Garry Howland one of the founding board of directors) and am a certified commercial diver. I have had the pleasure (and terror) of diving one of these types of rigs. Let me tell ya, the fear of having ones body compressed into your helmet is a rather sobering experience.

But its still cool looking for a 3D print The antiquing on it is wonderful.

yes it looks like an old style diving helmet. Very skillful bit of painting and printing.

    But why ?
Why spend so much time and effort making it ?

This kind of project just leaves me totally bemused.

Unless he intends to sell it for a lot of money. But otherwise, what's the point ?

    Art.

    Decoration.

    Knicknacks.

Lots of reasons. Its obviously meant as a man-cave sort of decoration. Its obviously not complete as its hanging on a wall.

As for 3D printing it... fake ones run $300-$600. True originals are thousands and US made extremely rare. Most of the originals out there are russian and jap surplus. Very few of the US helmets are still out in the wild.
