    webcam and linux

I just got a logitech c270 webcam that I want to use to monitor prints during the day. Eventually I will get a raspberry PI setup, but for now being able to watch a print works, as I can have my wife or kids stop a print that has gone wrong or if there is a problem.

I have a ubuntu lapto that I run my print jobs from, I very rarely print from the SD card. I am fairly Linux savy but don't do a lot with it at home. I couldn't get cheese to work, but was able to see the camera via VLC.

Suggestions? My thoughts are some kind of RDP software.

I don't have a fixed IP, so I am guessing I would need to use dynamic DNS correct? Also now that I think about it, I would like to be able to send files to my linux laptop to send stl's and gcode.
