Dr. George Vicatos and MSc student Severin Tenim of the University of Cape Town in South Africa have developed an award-winning mechanical prosthetic hand designed to be low-cost and functional. Created with the help of the team at the Centre for Rapid Prototyping and Manufacturing at the Central University of Technology, the Tenim Hand took home the Cutting Edge award at the Popular Mechanics FutureTech 2014 in Cape Town in October. The design has been patented, but the creators are still perfecting the hand, which will be significantly more affordable for lower income brackets of amputees in South Africa.
