3D Printed mold positives for imagery in kiln formed art glass

    Hi,

I have been making reverse lithophanes out of kiln formed art glass that are designed to be front lit. The method to print on glass is a different paradigm than conventional methods that use halftones. By mapping the gray scale values in the source image, then matching it with a glass that transitions from clear to the depth of the print and firing it - it yields continuous tone images in glass.

Here are a few images of a work in progress. 3D print in PLA backlit - Copy of 3D print in refractory material that powdered glass is fused into - First firing backlit to show the pattern in the glass from the 3D print based on the gray scale values in the source image - The pattern in the glass form the first firing is filled with colored powdered glass that transitions from clear to black in about the same distance as the relief in the 3D print - The piece is fired for a second time to fuse the colored powdered glass into the pattern to reveal a continuous tone image in glass.

These are really fascinating. Can you email me with more details on these, as I'd be interested in doing a story for 3dprint.com - 3dprintdotcom@gmail.com
