Jorge Luis, a systems engineer and graphic designer, first saw a captivating optical illusion pinwheel in Veracruz, Mexico, several years ago, and it stayed with him. He couldn't find out where to procure his own similar one, and let the idea go for a while -- until he recently saw another one at a local museum. This second sighting inspired him to make his own using his 3D printer. The project wasn't so simple as he initially thought, though, and it took five iterations to get his Optical Illusion Pinwheel to work just right with 8 spinning blades at just the right thickness and twist angles. He's shared his design on Thingiverse, along with his thought that it might be even more interesting if printed at a larger size.
