It caused James Wilson's father, Dr. Douglas Wilson, almost as much pain as his son suffered to watch his child's discomfort in using splints designed to straighten a congenital defect in his feet. The elder Wilson is a senior lecturer and the head of Auckland University's transportation engineering group, and he decided to come up with a way to free his son from the uncomfortable and expensive splints he'd been forced to wear for the last 10 years. So Wilson collaborated with pediatric neurologist Dr. Rakesh Patel and Professor Xun Xu, a lecturer on 3D printing, to build a brace that is cheaper and faster-to-make.
