Merging Pastries, 3D Printing and Tissue Engineering

Researchers, comprised of bioengineers and surgeons from Rice University and the University of Pennsylvania, have discovered success with some new research techniques that they believe may further their development in being able to make cellular structures, ultimately for transplantation, and do so much more quickly--while keeping them alive. Previously, challenges have occurred in implanted scaffolds of cells dying due to lack of oxygen after what was already a long scientific process involving a great deal of wait time. Now, they have 3D printed proof-of-concept constructs that can serve as templates for creating and mimicking tissue as well as being able to connect it to blood vessels.
