New to Ramps board need help 1 z stepper not moving

I just recently bought a printer (my second printer) just something to mess around with and get it printing to cut down on time it took to build things. My other printer is using a different control board and im not familiar with the RAMP 1.4 board, ive got everything hooked up but i can only get 1 of my z steppers to move at a time. they were spliced into one cable to connect to the ramps board but i noticed that there was a second connector for the z so i thought maybe it didnt like the slice so i decided to redo the cables and make them independent. im still getting the same result. i have tried switching to wires to the other connector making the other move that wasnt before move.

anyone have any ideas? please help
