The State of Bioprinting

Bioprinting and medical 3D printing have been gaining a lot of attention and a lot of hype lately, but where are these technologies currently? The idea of being able to 3D print organs is a very powerful one indeed. If researchers are successful in commercializing bioprinting then life could be extended for many people. Bioprinting can have a major impact in treatments for heart and liver disease, cancers, and more. We are, however, a few decades away yet from the technology really becoming viable. Bioprinting is one area where the general public probably has a far too optimistic view of what is possible today and where hope perhaps outweighs what is actually possible at the moment.
