3D Printed Implant Saves Woman From Leg Amputation

Ruth Smith-Leigh of South Boston, Virginia was told she would lose her leg following a devastating car accident last February that caused severe fracturing and bone loss. However, thanks to the intervention of Dr. Samuel Adams at Duke University Hospital in Durham, North Carolina, Smith-Leigh was the recipient of a 3D printed implant that saved her leg and helps assist the bone in repairing itself. The "scaffold" allows her bone to heal itself correctly, and Smith-Leigh has regained her ability to walk and has returned to her job as a teacher.
