Orbital Eye Socket Repairs Thanks to 3D Printing

Doctors and technicians at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University’s Industrial Center use 3D printed molds meant to improve orbital implant surgery. They take information derived from each patient’s CT scan and X-ray data and use it to reconstruct the “orbital floor” of a patient's eye socket with CAD software. They then build a pair of 3D printed molds – an upper and lower – and press a thin titanium sheet into the piece to provide strength. The molds are made from PC-ISO, a bio-compatible thermoplastic.
