When Do You Move from 3-D Printing to Traditional Manufacturing?

I'm a writer working on an article about how startup businesses navigate the path from 3-D printing to full-scale traditional manufacturing. I think most small businesses tend to use 3D printing for final products, whereas larger companies use it for the prototyping phase of manufacturing, and then use traditional manufacturing for the final products.
