Researchers are 3D Printing a Safer Bike Helmet

Between 2005 and 2013, over 26,000 cyclist deaths or serious injuries occurred in Great Britain. As more people turn to bicycles as a means of transportation, more thoughts have turned to the safety of those cyclists, especially in the face of existing grim statistics. Dr. Philip Martin and Dr. Peter Theobald of Cardiff University have teamed up in a research project backed by High Performance Computing (HPC) Wales to use supercomputer algorithms and 3D printed materials to develop customizable bicycle helmets. Most helmets on the market today are basically indistinguishable from one another, and a better design could dramatically improve safety. The researchers seek to develop a helmet that will reduce brain trauma by allowing for slight rotation of the skull, which allows the head to gradually slow down, reducing the rotation and impact on the brain.
